February - the month of Romance

Saint Valentine was a widely recognized 3rd-century Roman saint, commemorated in Christianity on February 14. From the High Middle Ages his Saints' Day is associated with a tradition of courtly love. There are two different Saints' Lives for a St Valentine on February 14, but they are probably the same man. Saint Valentine was a clergyman – either a priest or a bishop – in the Roman Empire who ministered to persecuted Christians.  He was martyred and his body buried at a Christian cemetery on the Via Flaminia close to the Ponte Milvio to the north of Rome, on February 14, which has been observed as the Feast of Saint Valentine (Saint Valentine's Day) since 496 AD.

Saint Valentine is commemorated in the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Churches on February 14. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, he is recognized on July 6.

We have two very special events to note this month - Ladies Appreciation Night and Breakfast Talk.

Ladies Appreciation Night will be held on Wednesday February 19, 2020 in the parish hall. Cost is $10 per person and is open to all Knights and their guests.   Contact webmaster@kofc8008.ca for tickets.

The Breakfast Talk will be held on Saturday February 29, 2020 starting with mass at 9:00 AM, followed by breakfast and our guest speakers, Deacon John and Sue Kennedy, on the topic - Marriage in the Modern World. Everyone is welcome. Cost is $12 person. Tickets available by emailing tickets@kofc8008.ca. More information is available here!

THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS AND VOCATIONS

Founded by a parish priest, the Knights of Columbus has always been a strong defender of the priesthood, and religious life and also a generous supporter of seminarians and those in religious formation. As the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world, the Order seeks to assist the Church with financial and moral assistance for this purpose. In light of the needs of the Church in our day, the Order has intensified its promotional programs in recent years. As Knights get more involved in vocations efforts, they find new meaning in their own vocations as Catholic laymen and members of the Order.

“Support your priests with your love and prayers, that they may always be shepherds after Christ’s heart.” -Pope Francis

RSVP PROGRAM

What is RSVP (Refund Support Vocations Program)?

The Knights of Columbus stands in solidarity with our priests and religious! Through the Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP), council and parish families raise funds to support seminarians and provide spiritual and moral support.

What are the funds used for?

Funds provided to seminarians and those in religious formation, are used to cover needs such as books, transportation, emergency expenditures and other living expenses.

What kind of spiritual and moral support is given?

We are called to aid seminarians and postulants with moral and emotional support as well as with prayers for their vocation and vocations throughout the church. This element is central to RSVP. We provide support in a variety of ways including writing letters to seminarian or religious postulant, sponsoring dinners to support them, and inviting them to fraternal events.

How do we Support our Seminarians/Postulants?

Our council supports at least one seminarian each year with a financial gift of $500. The need for priests is growing and we would like to support additional seminarians.

If each person in our parish donates just $1, we will be able to support at least 2 additional seminarians or postulates. Currently, our parish congregation has 2 seminarians and 1 postulate. Prayer! Prayer is the second way to support our seminarians/postulates. This year we want to flood each seminarian/postulate with prayer. The Knights of Columbus will be providing a card to each of the 17 Companion of the Cross, 9 Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall seminarians, one postulate with the Queenship of Mary and one postulate with Servants of the Cross.

We invite all parishioners to pray for each seminarian/postulate and sign their card. It could be as simple as a family signature or “we are praying a rosary for your each week, Doe Family”, etc. The cards will be available after mass in the hall Saturday November 23 and Sunday 24 and at the Chilli Dinner on November 23, 2019. These young men and women need our prayers and financial support.

We need your help!

Join the Knights of Columbus

I am intrigued by a recruitment campaign from Supreme: 24 HOURS CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE (and others!). Here is an illustration of just how much can be done as a Knight in 24 hours - 1 day!. And since this is what can be done in just one day, imagine what you could do with us in a week!

  • 8 HOURS a year working on council charitable project for your Church or community.
  • 4 HOURS a year enjoying a council social function (dinner, dance, picnic, etc.) with your entire family.
  • 4 HOURS a year attending council meetings to help plan future activities.
  • 6 HOURS a year (half an hour a month) reading the Knights’ magazine Columbia and visiting the Knights’ website www.kofc.org.
  • 1 HOUR a year meeting with your Knights of Columbus insurance agent for a free analysis of your family’s insurance needs and to learn about our exclusive, top-rated programs available only to members and their families.*
  • 1 HOUR attending Mass together with your council.

I would like to invite you to become more involved this year. As provided by Supreme, they have identified over 120 activities that Brother Knights have become involved with. We as a council are involved in about 30 activities a year – and maybe more, as some are not reported! Find you niche and become involved.
